PacWest Championship Preview

Chaminade Hosts PacWest Championships Saturday

10/20/2021 1:22:00 PM

KAHUKU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – Chaminade University will be the hosts of the Pacific West Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships this Saturday, which will be held at the Kahuku Golf Course in Kahuku, O'ahu. Hawai'i Pacific University is providing assistance in both races.

On the men's side, the Silverswords are paced by Owen Daugherty (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park), who has been the team's top finisher in all three races this season, recording top-four overall finishes in each of them, including a runner-up placement in the team's last race at the Chaminade Invitational on Oct. 9. Elijah Bernardo-Flores (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) has probably enjoyed his best season during his now-five-year running career for Chaminade with a pair of results as the team's second finisher.

For the 'Swords' women, Eri Leong (Las Vegas/SECTA) was their top finisher in their first two races while Caitlin Bocobo (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Sacred Hearts Academy), who also doubles as a member of the Chaminade women's soccer team, enjoyed a No. 1-team finish at the Chaminade Invitational. Ashley Yoshikawa (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) has finished as the Silverswords' second finisher twice.

Racing at Kahuku Golf Course might put Chaminade, as well as HPU and Hawai'i Hilo, at an advantage, having seen the course twice previously this season.

The races marks the first time since 2012 that the championships will be held on O'ahu, which was also held at Kahuku. The championships were last in Hawai'i in 2016 in Kea'au on the Big Island.

The race gets underway at 7:45 a.m. with the 6-kilometer women's race. The men's 8-k will start at around 8:45 a.m.

Fans will be permitted at the championships but will need to check in at the entrance of the golf course and provide proof of vaccination. Masks and social distancing will also be required.

Two-time defending champion Biola was picked by the PacWest coaches in August to three-peat as men's conference champion while on the ladies' side, Acadmey of Art was the preseason coaches selection.
