HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team ended their non-conference slate Friday with a 70-57 defeat to Dakota Wesleyan at McCabe Gymnasium.
Mary-Lee Mitchell (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) had a team-high 12 points while
Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) added 10 for the Silverswords who fell to 1-3.
Matti Reiner led the Tigers (6-2) with 18 points.
Jordyn Zader (Mukwonago, Wis./Pius XI) and
Lile Hina Oyama (Honolulu/Kalani) had nine points each for Chaminade while
Michaella Dean (Irvine, Calif./Orange Lutheran) pulled down seven rebounds. Dean and Martinez had three assists each with
Paige Relph (Las Vegas/Waianae) had three blocks.
The 'Swords had an early 6-2 lead and after Dakota Wesleyan went up 7-6, Mitchell had a layup to put Chaminade ahead 8-7. The Tigers pulled ahead on their next possession although the 'Swords stayed within five points the remainder of the first quarter.
Relph's layup with 6:12 remaining in the half proved to be Chaminade's last score of the half with DWU scoring the final 12 points to take a 40-25 lead at halftime.
The Silverswors were able to get the deficit to single digits twice in the third quarter. Down by 10 entering the fourth, Mitchell, Oyama and Martinez each hit layups to close to within 58-51 early in the fourth.
But the shots wouldn't drop in the later stages of the game with the 'Swords being held without a bucket over the next six minutes. Oyama's layup with 26 seconds left ended the drought but the Tigers outscored the 'Swords, 12-6, to sustain a double-digit lead.
Chaminade made 37.7 percent of its shots to Dakota Wesleyan's 43.6 and were out-rebounded 41-to-34. Both teams were 2-of-8 from 3-point range.
The Silverswords opens Pacific West Conference action Wednesday when they host Concordia University Irvine on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
