Men’s Soccer Falls in Road Finale

FRESNO, Calif. – For the second time this season, Kelton Cheney (State College, Pa./Penn State/State College HS) found the back of the net twice.

Unfortunately for the Chaminade University men's soccer team, it wasn't enough as the Silverswords dropped a 3-2 decision to Fresno Pacific Saturday at Ramirez Field in the finale of their four-match Northern California road trip.

Chaminade fell to 3-10 overall and 1-8 in the Pacific West Conference while the Sunbirds improved to 6-7 and 4-4 in the conference.

Cheney got the 'Swords on the board first, scoring just 2 minutes, 50 seconds in, the sixth-fastest goal in program history.

After FPU tied it on a penalty kick, Kelton struck again in the 20th minute, with his team-leading sixth goal of the season and his third multi-goal game of the year. Jamin Fonseca (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) and Colin Roemer (Cologne, Germany/Barton CC/Wirstschaftgymnasium Westerburg HS) provided the assists that put Chaminade ahead, 2-1.

But in the 42nd minute, the Sunbirds tied it, making it a 2-2 deadlock at halftime.

Fresno Pacific then got what proved to be the game-winner just two minutes into the second half from AntonioAngel Lepe's foot to give them their first lead of the game at 3-2. However the 'Swords were not able to get the equalizer in the final 42 minutes.

Chaminade took 14 shots, half being on-goal. Roemer took four of them, three of which were on target while Reilly Minigutti (Brooklyn, NY/Richmond International Academic and Soccer Academy/Dallas, Texas, Jesuit HS) took two shots.

FPU attempted 17 total shots with 'Swords' keeper Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) making six saves. Matteo Swenson had five stops for the Sunbirds.

The Silverswords will end their season next Saturday at the University of Hawai'i Hilo.
