HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team managed to break the 50-point barrier for the first time this season but it wasn't nearly enough as Hawai'i Pacific University defeated the Silverswords, 85-51, Friday at McCabe Gymnasium.
In the loss, however, two freshmen had impactful performances.
Emma Morris (Tuscon, Ariz./Tanque Verde) and
Lile Hina Oyama (Honolulu/Kalani) each had season-highs of 14 points for the youthful 'Swords.
Jordyn Zader (Muwonago, Wis./Pius XI) added 11 points, hitting nine of her 12 shots from the free throw line.
HPU, ranked No. 8 in the WBCA Coaches Top-25 Poll and No. 2 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, were paced by Olivia West's 29 points and 11 rebounds. Amy Baum, who in Tuesday's contest tied a Chaminade opponent record with 12 assists, matched that total in Friday's contest. She also added 20 points and had five steals and five boards.
For the 'Swords,
Carsen Bridges (Groveland, Fla./Leesburg) set season-highs of eight points and seven rebounds while
Michaella Dean (Irvine, Calif./Orange Lutheran) dished out a team-best four assists.
As a team, Chaminade went to the line a season-high 21 times, making 15 which is also a season best. Oyama made 5-of-7 at the line while Morris continued to show long-range ability by making 4-of-6 triples. She currently is second in the Pacific West Conference in 3-point percentage at 39.3 and is third in the conference in triples per game at 2.8.
The 'Swords wrap up their two-game home series against the Sharks on Saturday. Tipoff time is set for 12 p.m.
