KOHALA COAST, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team opened their 2021 season Saturday by dropping both their matches to the University of Hawai'i Hilo by identical 7-0 counts at the Fairmont Orchid Tennis Center.
In the morning opener, the Silverswords' No. 1 duo of
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore/Corvallis) and
Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) barely lost their match to the Vulcans' Hannah Highsmith and Carolina Alfonsin, 6-4.
In singles action that followed, Lau took the first set against Alfonsin but couldn't prevail, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 in No. 2 singles. The loss ended her two-match singles win streak dating back to last season.
Liner dropped her No. 1 singles match in straight sets as did No. 3
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku), who returned to the team after taking the 2020 off.
In the afternoon match, Liner and Lau avenged their earlier defeat to Highsmith and Alfonsin, winning their No. 1 doubles match, 6-2. However, UH Hilo still earned the doubles point by winning the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches.
Liner later fell to Sandra Dafinescu at No. 1 singles while Lau dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Carmelle Joyner, whom Lau defeated in the teams' final match last year.
The Silverswords are 0-2 to start while the Vulcans are 2-0.
