Women’s Soccer Battles to Draw Again

HONOLULU – For the second straight week, the Chaminade University women's soccer team had victory pulled from beneath their feet.

After a late goal cost them a win against the University of Hawai'i Hilo on Feb. 27, this time it was a penalty kick that denied them a win, although like their contest against the Vulcans, it did not involve a loss.

However, Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i/Pearl City) continues to amaze. After Laina Jumawan (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) took the ball away from a Shark, she found Fontes who scored on a breakaway in the 40th minute, which put the Silverswords (1-0-2) ahead.

Not only was it her 12th career goal, which moved her into second in the team's all-time goals list, Fontes became the first Silversword in team history to record a goal in three consecutive games.

It remained a 1-0 lead until the 78th minute when Chaminade was called for a penalty in the box. Kayli Yoshioka punched the PK goal to square the game.

With the winds picking late in the game, neither team was able to get a clear shot at the goal which ended in a second consecutive draw for the 'Swords.

Fontes took four of Chaminade's nine shots while Caili Cain (Honolulu/Kamehameha-Kapalama) attempted two.

Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) and her HPU counterpart, Melissa Froio, both made five saves.

Chaminade's defenders which include starters Kyla Takazono (Pearl City, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City), Dayna Nishimura (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Miliani), Tehani Smith (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) and Tiare Kahalewai (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Saint Martin's Univ./Mililani HS), along with reserve Saige Kalani (Honolulu/Dominican Univ. of Calif./Pearl City HS) allowed just one HPU shot in the final 20 minutes, that being the penalty kick.

The Silverswords will finish their short spring season this Saturday against UH Hilo.
