KOHALA COAST, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team returned the Big Island Saturday to face the University of Hawai'i Hilo in what will be one of their final tune-ups for the approaching Pacific West Conference Championships.
The Silverswords fell, 7-0, in the first of two matches on the day against the Vulcans at the Fairmont Orchid Tennis Center.
The 'Swords put up battles in the doubles matches with the duo of
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) dropping their No. 1 match to UH Hilo's Carolina Alfonsin and Hannah Highsmith, 6-3. On Court 2,
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku) and
Marisa Luna (Kahului, Maui, Hawai'i/Maui) were felled, 6-2, by Carmelle Joyner and Casydee De Mattos which helped the latter win the doubles point.
In singles action, Liner and Sandra Dafincescu duked it out in Court 1 before Dafincescu prevailed, 7-5, 6-2. In No. 3 singles, Te'i rebounded after dropping her first set to Joyner, putting a scare in her Hilo opponent in the second set before falling 6-4.
The 'Swords fell to 0-5 while UH Hilo improved to 6-5. The teams face each other in a rematch at 2 p.m.
