HONOLULU – With two PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournaments in the books at Hawai'i Pacific University and the University of Hawai'i Hilo, Saturday was the Chaminade University women's volleyball team's turn to host the six-match event.
Playing at home in the friendly confines of McCabe Gymnasium for the first time in 17 months, the Silverswords got back on the winning track with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 win over HPU, snapping a two-match losing streak and improving to 4-5 in the Pacific West Conference.
Brooklen Pe'a (Woods Cross, Utah/Youngstown State/Bountiful HS) and
Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) each put down 12 kills as the 'Swords hit .318 in their first of two matches of the day.
Reedy moved past Julie Edwards into 10th in the school's all-time kills list, giving her 804 in her career.
Kyra McCain (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) added seven kills and three blocks while Reedy also contributed with three.
Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit), who is second in the all-time Chaminade's digs list had 12, giving her 1,125, inching her closer to
Brenda Walker, who holds the school record with 1,239. She also had three service aces, moving past her current head coach,
Kahala Kabalis Hoke and Nani Kalama into a tie for seventh with former teammate Emma Tecklenburg in the career aces list with 99.
Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) dished out 26 assists while
Riley Lynch (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kalaheo) added eight.
Cameryn Collie lead the Sharks (2-7) with six kills.
A 5-0 Chaminade run midway through the first set helped them pull away for a one-set lead and got a streak of nine consecutive points early in the second to go up two sets.
The third set saw an 11-all deadlock but Reedy and Zanon accounted for two points on a kill and block while
Annah Rivera (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany) added another successful spike and even Wiley got into the action with a kill off a dump shot. It was all part of a 6-0 run that helped seal the match.
The 'Swords held HPU to just a .092 hitting percentage and had seven aces to the Sharks' four. CUH also outpointed Hawai'i Pacific, 42 to 27, in kills.
The match was played in front of 25 invited guests of both teams.
Chaminade faces UH Hilo later tonight at 7 p.m. The Vulcans (8-1) dropped HPU in straight sets in the 2:30 p.m. match.
