Volleyball Splits in Day 1 of Spring Tourney

HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team split their first two matches of the second PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament at Vulcans Gymnasium on the University of Hawai'i Hilo campus on Friday.
 
The Silverswords lost the first match to UH Hilo, 17-25, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, then rebounded by downing Hawai'i Pacific University in the evening match, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18.
 
Annah Rivera (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany) had a combined 27 kills on the day while Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) had 19 kills and 12 block assists. Brooklen Pe'a (Woods Cross, Utah/Youngstown State/Bountiful HS) added 21 kills, 23 digs and five service aces.
 
Chaminade is 3-3 on the season.
 
 
UH Hilo 3, Chaminade 1
The Vulcans used a 13-2 run midway through the first set outscored the 'Sword, 4 to 2 in natural points to take the first two sets.
 
UH Hilo was on the verge of winning in a sweep, taking a 21-17 edge in the third set but the 'Swords forced five Vulcans attack errors while Reedy put down two kills to force a fourth set.
 
But UH Hilo used a 10-1 run to turn a three-point deficit to a 17-11 lead to help them take the set and the match.
 
Rivera led Chaminade with 12 kills, followed by Reedy and Pe'a who had nine each. Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) and Riley Lynch (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kalaheo) combined for 35 assists while Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) had 13 digs, along with seven kills.
 
Chaminade continued to show their block with 9.5 in the match. Lataisia Saulala (Morgan Hill, Calif./Oakwood) had two block solos and three block assists while Reedy had four block assists.
 
The 'Swords were outhit, .218 to .163, while the Vulcans had 11 service aces to Chaminade's six.
 
Brea Beale had a match-high 19 kills for UH Hilo (5-1) who also defeated HPU earlier in the day.

The 'Swords got off to an ominous start, committing attacking errors on their first four swings of the match (for a team hitting percentage of minus-1.000). Eventually they righted the ship on a 13-5 run to take a 17-11 edge. HPU took advantage of several CUH errors to close to 17-15 but Pe'a put down three kills and an ace while Rivera added two kills to help the 'Swords take the first set. Chaminade hit .314 after committing the four straight hitting errors.
 
HPU rallied from a 9-5 deficit early in the second set with the help of 14-5 run to help tie the match at one set each.
 
Down 12-9 in the third set, the 'Swords forced five HPU hitting errors while Saulala and Reedy each had two kills as a part of a 12-1 surge to help them take a two-sets-to-one advantage.
 
Chaminade's block finally made its presence known at the start of Set 4. Reedy and Kyra McCain (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) each had three block assists to help the Silverswords take an 11-4 lead. After HPU closed to 16-14, McCain had a block and kill to help the 'Swords finish the set and match. Chaminade hit .370 and had six total team blocks in the final set.
 
Rivera led the 'Swords with a season-high 15 kills while Pe'a added 12 more to go along with 17 digs and three aces. Zanon, who started the match at libero, responded to the position switch with a season-high 19 digs. Reedy had 10 kills and set a career-high with eight block assists, as did McCain who also set a season high in the category.
 
Lynch had a team-high 22 assists while Wiley added 20.
 
Cameryn Collie had 10 kills to lead HPU (1-5).
 
The 'Swords hit .256 in the match with 56 kills to the Sharks' 31. They amassed 12 total team blocks while out-digging them, 66 to 50.
 
The Silverswords conclude the tournament Saturday when they face HPU at 1 p.m. and UH Hilo at 7 p.m.
