SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Chaminade University women's tennis team opened the 2021 Pacific West Conference Championships on Wednesday by dropping a 4-0 decision to Point Loma at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.
The Sea Lions, seeded fifth in the tournament, won the doubles point and the first three singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals. The Silverswords were making their first appearance in the conference championships since 2012
The Sea Lions took the doubles point after defeating, in succession, Chaminade's No. 3 doubles team of
Emily Ramirez Miranda (Honolulu/Kaiser) and
Skye Haraga (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Punahou) and No. 2
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku) and
Marisa Luna (Kahului, Maui, Hawai'i/Maui). Both were by 6-0 counts.
The 12th-seeded Silverswords' top doubles team of
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) was trailing Point Loma's top team of Gabi Armas and Angelique Friedreich, 3-2, when the match was called and left unfinished.
In singles action, Haraga (No. 6), Ramirez Miranda (No. 5) and Luna (No. 4) were defeated in order to allow the Sea Lions to advance.
Te'i (No. 3) was trailing her match 1-0 and down 3-0 in the second set upon Luna's defeat to Faith Pearson. Lau, at No. 2 singles, was also down by a set but was tied at 1 in the second to Thelma Sepulveda while Liner at No. 1 trailed by a set to Friedrich but was down just 3-2 in the second set. Those matches were left unfinished after the Sea Lions (6-7) won the necessary three singles matches.
The 'Swords (0-7) will face No. 11 seed Dominican University of California in the consolation round on Thursday at 5 p.m. Mountain time. The two teams last faced each in March 2020, just days before the remainder of the season was cancelled.
