HONOLULU – Saturday proved to be a rare opportunity for the Chaminade University men's soccer team when Seattle Pacific became the first nationally-ranked opponent to visit Saint Louis Field in 13 years.
Unfortunately for the Silverswords, the Falcons made the most of their opportunities, scoring three goals in the second half to pull away from the 'Swords, 4-0.
Chaminade fell to 2-2 on the year while Seattle Pacific, ranked 17th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll and making its first-ever trip to the islands, improved to 5-1.
The only other ranked opponent to face the 'Swords on the Saint Louis pitch was Sonoma State (then ranked No. 6) in August 2008.
Titus Grant opened the scoring in the 14th minute for SPU. Nik Reierson and Alex Mejia had second-half goals, respectively, while Alden Massey capped off the afternoon with a breakaway score with two-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Chaminade had several scoring opportunities throughout the match and even had a 5-to-4 advantage on corner kicks. However the 'Swords were not able to connect including a missed penalty kick with 24 seconds remaining in the first half which would have tied the contest at 1.
Brison Kim (Honolulu/Kalani) attempted to get Chaminade back on track by taking the team's first three shots of the second half but the Falcons pulled away with goals in the 51st and 69th minutes.
The 'Swords took 12 shots at the net with Kim trying four,
Jamin Fonseca (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) and
Mitchell Monteiro (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca) taking three each.
Clay Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) made three saves in taking the loss. His SPU counterpart, Lars Helleren, made two stops to earn the win.
The Silverswords will have the remainder of the month of September off then open Pacific West Conference action on Monday, Oct. 4 against Azusa Pacific at the Saint Louis Field pitch.
