Dean Sets Rebound Record at Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif – The Chaminade University women's basketball team was back in action Monday, facing nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific.

However, the Silverswords couldn't survive a 3-point barrage by the Cougars who hit 17 triples – one shy of the Chaminade opponent record – on-route to a 101-49 loss at the Felix Event Center.

In defeat, Michaella Dean (Irvine, Calif./Orange Lutheran) pulled down a program-record 19 rebounds, breaking the previous mark of 18 set by Lilia Maio in February 2015. The senior guard also had 10 points for her first career double-double which is also the first by a 'Sword since Destiny Castro accomplished it in February 2020. It was Dean's third double-digit rebound game in her last four outings with the only non-double-digit game being nine. The senior guard had nine boards in the first half alone.

Ellyonna Bankofier (Happy Valley, Ore./Clackamas) hit the double-digit scoring column for a career-best fourth straight game with 11 points for Chaminade which dropped to 1-10 overall and 0-7 in the Pacific West Conference. Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) had 10 points, four boards and three assists. Emma Morris (Tuscon, Ariz./Tanque Verde) added eight points while Paige Relph (Las Vegas/Waianae, Hawai'i) had five boards and a blocked shot.

Azusa Pacific (13-1, 9-0 PacWest), ranked No. 6 in the WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, got 26 points from Kayla Shaw, who hit six of her 10 3-point shots.

Of APU's 39 made baskets, 31 were assisted, one short of the CUH opponent record.

The 'Swords shot 28.1 percent from the floor with 36 boards, nine assists and four blocked shots.

The Cougars were 51.3 percent from the field with 50 rebounds and 11 steals.

The Silverswords return to action Thursday when they visit Concordia University Irvine at CU Arena. Only pre-approved spectators on team pass lists will be allowed, there will be no general admittance to both men's and women's games.
