HONOLULU –
Savannah Breeze Miranda (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea) fired in a goal from 25 yards out in the 89th minute to lift the Chaminade University women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 win Thursday over Holy Names University at Saint Louis Field.
After receiving a pass from
Clara Slate-Liu (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada/Ecolè Alpha Secondary) inside the Silverswords' attacking half, Miranda made a defender miss and, with a minute and 54 seconds left in the game, ripped a shot from well outside the 18-yard box into the upper right shelf for her first career goal. Slate-Liu's assist was also her first career point.
The victory improved Chaminade to 6-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Pacific West Conference, moving them into a tie with ninth-ranked Hawai'i Hilo for the conference lead with 10 points.
Holy Names fell to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in the PacWest.
Both teams benefitted from penalty kicks as their first scores of the game. Freshman forward
Isabella Narvaez (Vail, Ariz./Cienega) got Chaminade on the board in the 40th minute while the Hawks were awarded a PK in the 66th minute by Devin Lozano to square the game.
Over the next 22 minutes, the teams battled for possession and open looks at the net. Holy Names took two shots, both of which were wide while Chaminade's
Ruby Burroughs (Santa Clarita, Calif./California Baptist/William Hart HS) took three shots during the span, two of which were saved by HNU keeper Alexis Aguilar.
But the 'Swords finally broke through with just under two minutes left when Slate-Liu got a sideline pass to Miranda who eluded a defender before ripping her shot from 25 yards out.
The Silverswords attempted 12 shots with six on-goal. Burroughs launched five shots with three on target while Miranda had three.
Haley Mo'okini (San Gabriel, Calif./Gabrielino) had two looks at the net.
Chaminade's defense held the Hawks to just four shots on the afternoon including their penalty kick. Goalkeeper
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) earned her 17th career win, extending even further her career record. Despite surrendering her first goal in four matches on the penalty kick, Takata established a new program record for consecutive scoreless minutes at 352:55, breaking the old record held by Lauren Ishii at 328:59.
The Silverswords wrap up their home stand Tuesday when they face Fresno Pacific at the Saint Louis pitch at 10 a.m.
