Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to Simon Fraser

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season Friday with a 78-46 loss to Simon Fraser University in the Malika Sports PacWest/GNAC Challenge at McCabe Gymnasium.

Newcomers helped pace the Silverswords on the scoreboard with transfer Olivia Crigler (Hebron, Ky./Pacific Union College/Holy Cross HS) putting up a team-high 10 points while freshman Juliana Losalio-Watson (Ho'okena, Hawai'i/Konawaena) added seven points with six rebounds and two assists in Michael Edwards' debut as head coach.

Junior Emma Morris (Tuscon, Ariz./Tanque Verde) led the Chaminade returnees with eight points.

Gemma Cutler led the Red Leafs with 22 points in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Losalio-Watson accounted for Chaminade's first three points of the game with a free throw followed by a layup which put the 'Swords up, 3-1. But the Red Leafs scored the next 15 points to take early control. The Silverswords managed to slice Simon Fraser's double-digit lead down to 18-10 thanks to a driving layup by Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) and a triple from Morris towards the end of the first quarter.

SFU outscored Chaminade 20-10 in the second quarter and never looked back.

The 'Swords were held to 28.8 percent shooting from the floor with 30 rebounds and seven assists.

Simon Fraser hit 40.0 percent from the field and grabbed 56 rebounds with 13 assists.

The Silverswords conclude the Malika Sports Challenge Saturday against Montana State Billings, a 73-66 victor over Hawai'i Pacific University in Friday's second game. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
