Women’s Basketball Falls to Montana State Billings

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team closed out the Malika Sports PacWest/GNAC Challenge Saturday with an 85-43 loss to Montana State Billings at McCabe Gymnasium.

Olivia Crigler (Hebron, Ky./Pacific Union College/Holy Cross HS) had 12 points while Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) added 10 for the Silverswords (0-2).

Dyauni Boyce led all scorers with 16 points as the Yellowjackets finished 2-0 in their opening tournament of the season.

High rebounding honors for the 'Swords were Destiny Piekarski (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls) and Lile Hina Oyama (Honolulu/Kalani) with five each. Oyama also had a team-leading three assists.

Chaminade was initially able to hang with their physical opponents thanks to Crigler's five points in the first four minutes which enabled them to trail just 10-7. A Paige Relph (Las Vegas/Waianae, Hawai'i) layup cut their deficit to 14-11 but MSU Billings closed the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 24-11 lead.

Dezaray Carter (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts Academy), playing her first collegiate game, opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-pointer. After the Yellowjackets extended their advantage to 32-14, Chaminade went on a mini-run with Destiny Piekarski (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls) getting a free throw and a bucket to it back to a 13-point deficit. MSUB answered with a run of its own to take a 42-23 halftime lead.

The 'Swords were 14-of-45 from the floor but made 12 of their 15 free throw tries.

Montana State Billings was 30-of-72 from the field, hit nine triples and made all but one of its 17 trips to the charity stripe.

The Silverswords return to the McCabe Gym floor Monday against Alaska Anchorage. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
