HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team opened their 2022 season Thursday against Concordia University Irvine in the opening match of the Hawai'i Invitational at Ke'ehi Lagoon Tennis Courts.
The Silverswords came away with a 7-0 loss to the Eagles (2-0), who are receiving votes in the ITA Division II Preseason Poll.
With doubles competition opening action, Chaminade's No. 1 team of
Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) and
Kylie Ye (Honolulu/Asia Pacific International School) competed against CUI's duo of Heather Richards and Maya Arksey before falling 6-2. Concordia captured the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to earn the doubles point.
In singles action which followed, Lau made her first career appearance in the No. 1 spot – the first 'Sword since Elyssa Shirai at the end of the 2017 season to play in the top singles spot other than
Catrina Liner – but fell to Tiffany Carrillo, 6-0, 6-0.
Salamasina Robertson (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku), the former Salamasina Te'i, played the No. 2 singles position in a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Arksey.
The Hawai'i Invitational continues Saturday as Chaminade (0-1) meets the University of Hawai'i Hilo at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park at 3 p.m.
