PLESANTON, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's golf team began their championship spring season Monday with a two-round 633 at the par-72, 6,980-yard Ruby Hill Golf Club in the Bay Area Invitational.
The start of the opening morning session was delayed by an hour due to frost where the Silverswords opened with a 319 in chilly conditions but followed with a 314 in the afternoon. Chaminade sits in 14th place overall, just 11 shots behind island rival Hawai'i Pacific University.
Freshman
Josh Lavallee (Haverhill, Mass./Central Catholic), who joined the team after the winter break, is the 'Swords' 36-hole leader with a 157, a shot better than
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) who had a 158.
Lavallee posted an 81 in the opening round but rebounded with a 76 in the afternoon. Gunderson had Chaminade's low morning score with a 3-over-par 75 but shot 83 in the second round.
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) fired a 160 while
Ryan Shields Vega (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake) carded a 161. Another mid-season newcomer to the team,
Seven Birks (Houston, Texas/IMG Academy) shot a 163.
Cal State San Marcos is the second-round leader with a 5-under 571, 14 shots better than Western Washington.
CSUSM's Matt Pennington is the individual leader at 10-under 134, holding a seven-shot lead over Chico State's Mike Stephens.
The Bay Invitational concludes Tuesday with the 18-hole finale.
