Women’s Soccer Battles Westmont to Scoreless Draw

HONOLULU – Earlier on Saturday, the men's soccer matchup between Chaminade University and Westmont College featured eight goals, a player with three assists and a Silverswords rally from a 2-0 deficit to deadlock the game at two.

The women's matchup in the nightcap did not have the offensive fireworks of the men's game. Instead, there seemed to be a methodical pace to the flow in the first-ever meeting between the two programs as the contest ended in a nil-nil draw.

It was just the eighth time in program history – and the second time this season – the Silverswords had a match end in a scoreless tie. In fact, there was no significant statistics of note, with no cards assessed to either team. It was just the third time in school history there were no scores or cautions by either squad, despite a physical game with 33 combined fouls called.

The draw put Chaminade at 6-3-4 on the season with their fourth tie breaking a program record. With a 4-1-2 Pacific West Conference mark, the Silverswords gained a point in the conference tables with 14 points, staying within four of first-place Hawai'i Hilo which lost its first PacWest game on Saturday, a 3-0 decision to Point Loma.

Westmont, a women's soccer power with five NAIA national championships before making the move to NCAA Division II and the PacWest this year, is 4-2-5 and 2-1-2 in the conference.

With both teams jostling for ball possession throughout the game, shots were limited to eight for the 'Swords and seven for the Warriors. Haley Mo'okini (San Gabriel, Calif./Gabrielino) attempted a team-high three for Chaminade.

The closest the game came to being untied was in the 37th minute when Mo'okini's set-piece from 40 yards out was deflected by leaping Westmont goalkeeper Maya Pablos then ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play before being cleared away.

Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) made two saves, earning her 20th career clean sheet and 13th career tie. Pablos had three saves for the Warriors.

The Silverswords are next in action Monday, Oct. 30, against Azusa Pacific at the Saint Louis Field pitch. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
