WAIMEA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's golf team Friday opened the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawai'i Hilo with a 306 at the par-72, 6,875-yard Hapuna Golf Course.
The Silverswords are 16th and hold a 20-shot lead over future Pacific West Conference member Williams Jessup following the first round. They trail 15th-place Cal State Dominguez Hills by just four strokes.
The University of Texas Permian Basin leads the tournament at 15-under 273 and has a nine-shot lead over Colorado Christian University.
Freshman
Ky Stopp (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) fired an opening round 3-under-par 69, putting him in a tie with three others for fourth place overall. Stopp, who played a bogey-free round with three birdies, trails first-round leader Sangha Park of UTPB by seven shots.
Ethan Alexander (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and
Zachary DuBourdieu (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek) both carded 5-over 77s while
Jack Yeager (San Clemente, Calif./JSerra Catholic) had an 82 followed by
Blake Buonopane (Rowley, Mass./St. John's Prep) at 83.
Alexander had one of the tournament's two eagles on the day, getting it on the par-5 14th. Cal State Monterey Bay's Wilhelm Berg von Linde had the other eagle, also at the 14th hole.
The Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, which marks the traditional end of the non-championship fall season, concludes with the 18-hole finale on Saturday.
