TURLOCK, Calif. – The nationally ranked Chaminade University women's volleyball team on Monday completed an undefeated Northern California road trip, defeating Stanislaus State, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 25-17, in a rare out-of-conference October match at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
The Silverswords, who remained at No. 18 in the latest AVCA/TARAFLEX Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll which was released an hour after the start of Monday's match, got a career-high 16 kills and a .306 attack percentage from
Heavenly Campbell (Waialua, O'ahu, Hawai'i/College of Southern Idaho/Damien HS) in her first career start.
Greta Corti (Varese, Italy/Univ. of San Francisco/Alessandro Manzoni Liceo HS) added 15 kills and nine digs while
Ajack Malual (Rome, Italy/Tambosi ETI) contributed with 14 kills, 10 digs and four blocks.
Chaminade, which last played an October non-conference match on the mainland in 1999 at Seattle University, finished off a 4-0 road trip and improved to 17-2 on the season. It also capped off a 12-0 mark against non-conference opponents.
Lizanyela Lopez (Lima, Peru/Trinity Valley CC/Saco Oliveros HS) added seven kills while she and
Sophie Schilling (Berlin, Germany/Alaska/Schul- and Leistungsportszentrum Berlin HS) both had three blocks.
Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane) tallied yet another double-double with 36 assists and 14 digs while
Hula Crisostomo (Honolulu/Univ. of Texas El Paso/Moanalua HS) had a match-high 25 digs.
Stanislaus State from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) fell to 6-11 on the year. Isabella Saucedo put down a team-high nine kills for the Warriors.
Chaminade used runs of 4-0 and 5-0 to help pull away from Stan State in the opening set although the Warriors managed to run off five straight before a service error ended the frame.
That run, however, seemed to give momentum to the home squad as they jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the next set. Although the 'Swords managed to close to within a point, Stan State got four natural points midway through to square the match at one each.
With the Warriors holding on to a 13-11 edge in the third, Campbell's kill began a decisive 10-1 surge to put Chaminade ahead, 21-14. Campbell accounted three points during the run with two kills and a block while Malual had two kills and two aces during the stretch to help the Silverswords win the important third set.
Stanislaus fought back from an early 5-1 deficit in the fourth and eventually took five one-point leads, the last at 15-14. But a Warriors hitting error followed by consecutive aces from
Kyra Pagud (Honolulu/Moanalua) put Chaminade ahead for good. Corti would follow suit with back-to-back aces of her own as a part of a match-ending 7-0 run.
Chaminade hit .217 on the afternoon and held Stanislaus State to .119. The 'Swords totaled 57 kills, 52 assists, nine aces, 81 digs and six total team blocks while the Warriors had 36 kills, 34 assists, eight aces, 66 digs and four blocks.
The Silverswords return home and return to PacWest action Thursday against in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University at McCabe Gymnasium. First serve is at 7 p.m. An alumni match will precede it at 4:30 p.m.
