Men’s Soccer Fall to CUI in Penultimate Game

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team on Thursday dropped a 4-1 decision at Saint Louis Field to Concordia University Irvine in the second-to-last match of the season.

Owen Malone (Carlsbad, Calif./Univ. of Saint Katherine/Carlsbad HS) accounted for the Silverswords' lone goal of the morning.

The 'Swords fell to 0-11-3 on the season and 0-7-2 in the Pacific West Conference. CUI improved to 5-8 and 4-4 in the conference.

The Golden Eagles scored three times in the first 22 minutes of the game. The 'Swords countered in the 39th minute when a long throw in from the near sideline by La'akea Gonsalves (Anahola, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kapa'a) went towards the left-side post where Malone tapped in the loose ball.

Despite being down by two goals, Chaminade kept the pressure on and did not allow CUI to get a clean look at the net. Silverswords goalkeeper Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) made four saves from the start of the second half until the Golden Eagles got their fourth goal of the contest in the 82nd minute.

Chaminade took 16 shots at CUI goalkeepers with Ryan Anderson (Carlsbad, Calif./Cal State Monterey Bay/San Marcos HS) taking a team-high four shots, two on-goal. Malone and Joseph Wren (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Utah Valley/Kapolei HS) each attempted three shots.

Yasue made six saves while Concordia keepers Andre Flores and Joseph Panetta combined for five.

The Silverswords will end the 2023 season on Sunday, Nov. 12 against the University of Hawai'i Hilo for Senior Day. Kickoff at the Saint Louis pitch will be at noon.
