HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team resumed action Friday, dropping an 82-49 decision to Northwestern Oklahoma State in the Hoops in Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic at the Hawai'i Pacific University Shark Tank.
Sameera Elmasri (Shawnee, Kan./Birmingham-Southern Univ./Saint Thomas Aquinas HS) had 14 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Silverswords in their first game against a fellow NCAA Division II squad this season.
Ashley Holen (Watford City, N.D./Minot State University/Watford City HS) added eight points for Chaminade, which fell to 2-2 on the year.
Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) and
Kylie Squier (Branchville, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) chipped in with five points each.
Faith Simpson led all scorers with 20 points as the Rangers remained undefeated at 5-0.
The 'Swords cut a 25-point, second quarter deficit down to 16 but a 24-5 Northwestern Oklahoma run spanning the third and fourth quarters ruined all notions for a massive comeback.
Chaminade got off to a slow start, trailing 9-1 before they got their first field goal on a Martinez layup three minutes into the game. NWOSU ended the quarter with 11 straight points for a 25-7 lead.
The Rangers' lead grew to 35-10 before the 'Swords got seven points from Elmasri during an 11-2 run to close the gap to 37-21. But that would be as close as they would get before the visitors began pulling away.
The 'Swords shot 25.8 percent from the field with five 3-pointers and 12-of-20 from the free throw line. The Rangers were 45.6 from the floor with four triples and made 16 of their 23 shots at the charity stripe. Chaminade was out-rebounded, 51-to-33, and had 19 turnovers to NWOSU's 13.
The Silverswords will close out the Hoops in Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic on Sunday against Montana State Northern, their final NAIA opponent of the season. Tipoff at the HPU Shark Tank is set for 1 p.m.
