HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team opened the regular season Thursday by dropping a 9-0 decision to the University of Hawai'i Hilo at Keehi Lagoon Park.
The Silverswords, coming off their exhibition against the University of Calgary on Monday, debuted five freshmen making their collegiate debuts.
Berylin Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) and
Molly Cookman (Racine, Wis./Prairie), two of the team's newcomers, dropped their No. 1 doubles match by a 6-1 count. Another freshman,
Kirra Carvalho (Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kaua'i), paired with sophomore
Sydney Danielson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake in No. 2 doubles with a 6-1 loss. Freshman
Danica Palmer (Philadelphia/Upper Merion Area) teamed with senior
Emily Ramirez Miranda (Honolulu/Kaiser) in No. 3 doubles, dropping their match, 6-0.
The team's fifth freshman,
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway), who is also a member of the Chaminade women's basketball team and just 14 hours removed from playing 17 minutes of action against Hawai'i Pacific University, made her tennis debut in No. 4 singles, falling by a 6-0, 6-0 count.
Lau took the Vulcans' Akari Ichikawa to a 6-1, 6-3 loss in No. 1 singles while Carvalho was competitive in her No. 3 singles match against Nanami Okamoto with a 6-4, 6-0 defeat. Cookman trailed her match but had to retire due to an injury. Danielson dropped her No. 5 match by a 6-1, 6-1 count and Ramirez Miranda fell in No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The Silverswords are back in action Friday when they return to Keehi Lagoon to face Holy Names. Doubles matches begin at 10 a.m.
