HILO, Hawai'i – On Thursday, the Chaminade University women's soccer team will play a non-conference tilt at the University of Hawai'i Hilo Soccer Field. On Sunday, the Silverswords got a preview of the same pitch they'll play on as they faced Stanislaus State.
However, the Warriors got a late score just when it appeared the match was headed to a tie.
Alexis Brewah's goal in the 86th minute was the game's only goal, with the 1-0 decision handing the Silverswords their first loss of the season, dropping them to 2-1-2.
Stanislaus State, the preseason favorite to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), improved to 3-2-1 on the season, to win the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
After 86 minutes in a nil-nil game, Marivic Lek-Miro lofted a looping pass over the defense to the midfield line where it was gathered by Brewah, who spun and, with a defender on her hip, advanced the ball to the top of the box. She fired a shot from 20 yards out where
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) got a hand on the ball but not enough to alter the trajectory.
Although Chaminade fired off 14 shots in the match, they could not get one off in the final three minutes as they looked for the equalizer.
Shaley Mercado (Honolulu/Kaiser) was one of three 'Swords who took three shots and nearly had the game's first goal in the 83rd minute but her attempt inside the goal area was saved.
Kenna Kiefer (Vail, Ariz./Cienega) and
Isabella Narvaez (Vail, Ariz./Cienega) also took three shots.
Takata faced seven shots, making one save.
Malia Allen got the nod in-goal for Stan State in the final 45 minutes to pick up the win.
The Silverswords will return to Hilo on Thursday and face UH Hilo in their final non-conference match of the season. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
