FRESNO, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's soccer team on Monday opened Pacific West Conference action with a 2-0 win over Fresno Pacific at Ramirez Field.
Haley Mo'okini (San Gabriel, Calif./Gabrielino) and
Delaney Buntin (Vail, Ariz./Pima CC/Cienega HS) each scored to help the Silverswords snap their two-game losing streak and put them back over .500 at 3-2-2 on the season.
The Sunbirds dropped their fourth straight to fall to 1-7-0 and 0-1-0 in the conference on the season.
The Silverswords, who now have a three-match winning streak against FPU, struck first when Mo'okini converted Chaminade's first penalty kick of the season in the 34th minute, her first of the season.
FPU nearly tied the game just seconds later but
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) made diving saves on two shots by Alena Schenk, a Kaneohe native and Sacred Hearts Academy graduate, including a rebounded shot that Takata knocked away.
Just two minutes later, the 'Swords turned a corner kick into score when Buntin powered in a saved header from five yards out to give them a two-goal advantage by halftime. It was Buntin's second goal of the year.
Chaminade managed to make the score stand in the final 45 minutes, holding off seven shots.
The 'Swords took 17 shots, 11 on-goal, with Buntin attempting a team-high four.
Lela Gi (Las Vegas/Liberty) and
Isabella Narvaez (Vail, Ariz./Cienega) with three each. Chaminade also took a program-record 11 corner kicks.
Fresno Pacific took 11 shots with Takata making six saves in picking up the win. Monique Neverez made nine saves for the Sunbirds in taking the loss to fall to 1-5.
The Silverswords will next be in action Thursday when they face Academy of Art at Paul Goode Field in San Francisco.
