HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's and men's cross country teams had a successful Saturday at the University of Hawai'i Hilo Invitational at the Grand Naniloa Banyan Golf Course.
The Silverswords captured the women's 6-kilometer race with 27 points, five better than Hawai'i Pacific University and 37 better than host UH Hilo.
Maria Steinke (Columbus, Ohio/University of Dayton/Bexley HS) and
Nikiji Dayse (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) finished 1-2, individually, to help the 'Swords win their second straight race. Steinke also finished with medalist honors for the second straight event.
Steinke posted a time of 24 minutes and 8.4 seconds while Dayse was next at 24:49.7.
HPU had the next three finishers while
Caitlin Bocobo (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) was sixth overall at 26:33.6 while
Cassie Chong (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) finished eighth 27:02.1.
Zoe Lucas' (Fremont, Calif./Washington) crossed the finish line at 27:47.9, thus insuring Chaminade's first-place finish.
Leila-Jayne Casison (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu) recorded a time of 28:40.0.
In the men's 8-k race, the Silverswords won the event via default when HPU was unable to field the minimum five runners.
Mason Stewart (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown) had a runner-up finish, crossing the line in 27:52.2 while
Peter Jan Ramos (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu) was fourth overall at 28:51.0.
Owen Daugherty (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) was next at 29:04.9.
Ben Salinas (Highland, Ind./Western Colorado Univ./Highland HS) came in eighth at 31:41.9 followed by
Lennon Lindholm (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) at 38:38.1 and
Conor McMahon (Pacific, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) at 39:46.8.
Both Silverswords teams will return to action next Saturday at the HPU Invitational at Kahuku Golf Course.
