GUNNISON, Colo. – For the second straight year, the Chaminade University women's soccer team ventured to the high mountains for inter-region competition against members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
And for the second straight year, the Silverswords came away ahead on the scoreboard.
Kenna Kiefer (Vail, Ariz./Cienega) scored the game's only goal to help the 'Swords on Friday defeat Western Colorado, 1-0, at Katy O. Rady Field, for the second straight year. The win was Chaminade's first victory of the season after last Saturday's season-opening scoreless draw against Northwest Nazarene.
After a scoreless game through the first 61 minutes, the Silverswords (1-0-1) got the ball into the attacking quarter where
Bailey Loria (Fontana, Calif./Aquinas) retrieved it towards the left corner. Loria got a pass to Kiefer just inside the 18-yard line, who one-timed it towards the lower left-corner for her freshman's first career goal.
Chaminade's defense took over from there, allowing just three shots the remainder of the game.
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) made two saves to earn her 19th career win and 16th career clean sheet, both school records.
Mei Hayashizaki, absorbed the loss for the Mountaineers who fell to 0-2-1.
Kiefer and
Shaley Mercado (Honolulu/Kaiser) each took three shots for Chaminade.
The Silverswords will remain in Gunnison and face Fort Lewis College on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. Hawai'i time.
