HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team on Saturday fell in a 91-61 decision to Point Loma at McCabe Gymnasium.
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) continued her recent scoring binge with a team-high 13 points, tying the season-high she set in the Silverswords' previous game on Thursday against Azusa Pacific.
Ashley Holen (Watford City, N.D./Minot State University/Watford City HS) added 12 points as the other 'Sword in double-figures.
Schuetze, who has put together three-straight double-digit scoring contests, also had three assists.
Morgan Escobedo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle) pulled in a team-best seven rebounds for Chaminade (3-15, 1-12 Pacific West Conference).
Emma Morris (Tucson, Ariz./Tanque Verde) added seven more in the scorebook with
Madison Gage (Broomfield, Colo./Legacy) getting six and
Kylie Squier (Branchville, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) tying her season-high with five.
Former Hawai'i Pacific University Shark Tavia Rowell led all scorers with 15 points in helping the Sea Lions improve to 11-9 and 7-5 in the PacWest.
Point Loma went 17-of-32 in the second half (53.1 percent) while holding Chaminade to 12-of-36 (33.3 percent), outscoring them 50-36. Although the Sea Lions made just one 3-pointer the entire 40 minutes, they amassed 64 points in the paint to the 'Swords' 24.
The start was rather competitive with Chaminade owning an 11-6 edge. But a 14-1 run late in the first quarter put PLNU up, 20-12, before Holen's layup ended the 'Swords' field goal drought. The Sea Lions, who owned a 24-16 lead entering the second quarter, outscored the Silverswords, 17-9, taking a 41-25 halftime edge.
The 'Swords missed their first eight field goal attempts of the third quarter until
Julien Parado's (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) layup at the 4:47 mark of the third quarter. However, the Sea Lions had already owned a 30-point lead to improve to 17-0 all-time in the series.
Chaminade shot 32.8 percent, made six triples and was 15-of-21 from the free throw line.
Point Loma was 54 percent from the field and made 22-of-29 from the foul line. The Sea Lions owned the boards by a 48-to-28 count and dished out 19 assists.
The Silverswords will close out their six-game home stand Tuesday against the University of Hawai'i Hilo at McCabe Gym, the first of back-to-back meetings between the two rivals. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
