Men’s Soccer Gain 1-1 Draw at Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's soccer team was back on the pitch Monday, forcing a 1-1 draw against Pacific West Conference newcomer Vanguard University at the VU Soccer Complex.

Owen Malone (Carlsbad, Calif./Univ. of Saint Katherine/Carlsbad HS) accounted for the Silverswords' lone goal while Owen Caba (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) got the assist.

The tie moved the 'Swords to 1-5-3 overall and 1-2-3 in the PacWest with six conference points. The Lions, who are contending for the conference regular season title in their first year, remained at third in the standings with 13 points and a 4-2-1 conference mark while sitting at 6-3-2 overall.

The 'Swords opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Caba crossed a pass from the left side of the Vanguard box, cutting through a swath of Lions defenders where Malone tapped the ball in from just inside the goal area off the right post.

It was Malone's team-leading third goal of the season while Caba got his third assist and the eighth of his career, putting him just one behind Colin Roemer's career record.

But the Lions counted with the tying score in the 50th minute off an unassisted score from Zachary Miramontes.

Despite being outshot, 14-to-2, after the equalizing score, the 'Swords were able to keep Vanguard out of the net to force the draw.

Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) made two saves while his Lions' counterpart, Aidan Hay, made one.

VU took 21 shots and attempted eight corner kicks while CUH took four shots and had one corner.

The Silverswords' southern California road trip continues Thursday at Azusa Pacific.
