COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's soccer team on Monday faced Pacific West Conference newcomer Vanguard University and got a nil-nil draw at the VU Soccer Complex.
The tie put them at 5-2-4 overall and, with a 4-0-2 PacWest mark, gave them a point in the conference standings with 14, putting them in fourth, just one behind Westmont College. It is the program's best conference mark through six games and their sixth straight without a loss, tying them with the 2022 squad who also had four wins and two ties during a six-game stretch.
The Lions are 3-8-2 and 1-4-2 in the conference, although they have played several close games including a 1-0 loss to PacWest-leading Point Loma earlier this month and, most recently, a 0-0 draw to Hawai'i Hilo last Saturday.
With both teams jostling for scoring chances without success in the first 85 minutes, the 'Swords had a prime opportunity in the 86th minute when a through-ball from
Lela Gi (Las Vegas/Liberty) found
Lana Mahi-Murray (Hilo, Hawai'i/Waiakea) down the left sideline. The Lions defender slipped, giving the freshman a one-on-one chance against goalkeeper Jordin Holmquist-Wilder, who charged and deflected the shot away, the last of her five saves.
Gracie Knowd (Ramona, Calif./New Mexico State/Ramona HS) also had a chance seconds later but her one-timer at the top of the box was too high.
Meanwhile 'Swords' keeper
Izabella Holly (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega) made five saves and made several heady stops to tally the freshman's fifth clean sheet.
Chaminade took 11 shots, led by three from
Savannah Breeze Miranda (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea) and had five corner kicks. Vanguard fired off nine shots to three corners.
The Silverswords will be at Azusa Pacific on Thursday.
