WAIMEA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's golf team opened the Southwest Airlines HPU Sharks Shootout, their final tournament of the fall non-championship season, on Friday in eighth place after shooting an opening-round 3-over-par 283 at the par-70 Waikoloa Beach Course on the Big Island.
Jack Yeager (San Clemente, Calif./JSerra Catholic) fired a first round 2-under-par 68 – a career-low for a single round – and is tied for 14th with three others.
Ky Stopp (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson), who had a hole-in-one on the par-3, 130-yard 8th during Thursday's practice round, did not ace the hole in Friday's opener but did get a birdie, one of his four on the day, on-route to an even-par 70.
A.J. Dahlk (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) is at 1-over 71. The freshman had trouble on the front nine with a double-bogey and triple-bogey but found success on the back nine with three straight birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15.
Ethan Alexander (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) is at 4-over 74 after Round 1 followed by
Blake Buonopane (Rowley, Mass./St. John's Prep) at 5-over 75.
Cal State East Bay leads all teams at 19-under, holding a three-shot lead over Colorado Christian University.
CCU's Adam Duncan is the first round individual leader at minus-6, a shot better than five others.
The Shootout concludes Saturday with first tee times at 7:30 a.m.
