KAILUA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team on Friday opened their 2024 season with a 7-0 defeat to No. 15 Hawai'i Pacific University at the Kailua Racquet Club.
The match was rescheduled from the original Feb. 15 date due to a weather postponement.
In the opening doubles action,
Kylie Ye (Laie, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Asia Pacific International School) and
Kirra Carvalho (Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kaua'i) dropped their match in No. 2 duos while
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) and
Anciane Claire Miguel (Honolulu/Farrington) fell in No. 3 doubles.
The Silverswords No. 1 doubles team of
Berylin Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) and
Jordyn Luna (Kahului, Maui, Hawai'i/Maui) faced HPU's tandem of Abigail Wild and Jayanne Palma. Lau and Luna managed to hang with the West Region's seventh-ranked doubles team according to the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association), trailing 4-2 when the first two doubles matches ended, giving the doubles point to the Sharks.
HPU took all six singles matches but Carvalho gave Palma a run in the No. 3 position by falling 6-3 in the first set. At No. 2, Luna made a run against Isabel Heupgen in the second set before dropping the set, 6-2.
The Silverswords are back in action on Saturday, March 2, in a doubleheader against the University of Hawai'i Hilo. The first match is at 10 a.m. followed by the second at around 1 p.m. Both matches will be at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Only those with military ID will have access to enter the base.
