PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The Chaminade University men's golf team is in third place after two rounds of the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championships at TPC Sawgrass.
With Tuesday's second round of the Division II competition moving to the famed Stadium Course – where the PGA Tour's PLAYERS Championship is held each year – and with national television coverage on the Golf Channel, the Silverswords shot a 317, dropping them to third overall. However, they are still well within contention for the team title at 623, just four shots behind 36-hole leader Lincoln University of Missouri. The 'Swords also trail second-place Bluefield State from West Virginia by two strokes heading into Wednesday's final round.
Jack Yeager (San Clemente, Calif./JSerra Catholic) shot a second-round 3-over-par 75, moving him up five spots in a three-way tie for second in the D-II medalist standings at 6-over 150, just five shots behind Round 2 leader Austin Shoemaker of Lincoln.
Ethan Alexander (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep), who was second after the opening round, shot a 6-over 79, dropping him into a tie for fifth at 7-over but still within striking distance of the top spot.
Both Yeager and Alexander parred the par-3, 137-yard 17th island hole, the Stadium Course's signature hole which is surrounded by water.
Zachary DuBourdieu (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek) shot 82 in his second round, giving him a two-round total of 161 with
Ky Stopp (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) had an 82 on Tuesday, giving him a 162.
Blake Buonopane (Rowley, Mass./St. John's Prep) carded an 81, a seven-shot improvement from Monday, despite playing on the difficult course. His second round score tied for the 14th-lowest in the entire field. The sophomore is at 169 after 36 holes.
The Silverswords close out the tournament on Wednesday when they move back to the TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley Course. The men's Division II competition will begin at the 10th hole with Buonopane as Chaminade's first golfer to tee off at 3:05 a.m. Hawai'i time. Alexander has a 3:44 a.m. tee time followed by Yeager with the final group at 3:57 a.m. The Golf Channel and Peacock will broadcast the final round and will focus on the Stadium Course between 9 a.m. and noon HST.
The 'Swords are seeking the school's first-ever national championship.
