HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team suffered their second loss of the season Thursday, dropping a 3-1 decision to Stanislaus State at Saint Louis Field.
An action packed first half included five shots from the Warriors and six from the Silverswords with goals from both teams to end the first half with a score of 2-1 in favor of Stan State.
The Warriors struck first with an early goal in the first half to put them up 1-0. The Silverswords responded with a goal by
Kala'i Duncan (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) from a corner kick by
Owen Caba in the 10th minute to square the game at 1.
Just prior to the end of the first half, the Warriors found a way to get ahead with a goal in the 40th minute to go up, 2-1 at the break.
The Warriors got insurance goals in the second half with a goals from Alecxander Cuellar, his second of the match, and another from Leonardo Muniz.
Fittingly,
Kili Chappell (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Stanislaus State/Baldwin HS) got his first career start in goal against the very same Warriors team he suited up for the past two seasons. The junior stopped three shots, facing 12 in all, in falling to 0-2.
His counterpart, Angel Ruiz-Hernandez, made three saves to earn the win in helping the Warriors improve to 2-1.
Owen Malone (Carlsbad, Calif./Univ. of Saint Katherine/Carlsbad HS) attempted a team-high three shots with Ruben Aguinaga (Chula Vista, Calif./San Diego Christian College/Montgomery HS) and
Ian Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./Cuyamaca College/Meter Dei HS) firing off two each.
The Silverswords (0-2) return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25 against in-city rival Hawai?i Pacific University in a non-conference matchup at Waipio Peninsula Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
