HONOLULU – Back home for the first time in three weeks, the Chaminade University women's soccer team on Saturday made their regular season home debut in a non-conference bout with interisland foe University of Hawai'i Hilo at Saint Louis Field.
Savina Zamborini's goal in the 23rd minute was all the Vulcans needed to eke out a 1-0 win.
The Silverswords suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 1-1-2 while UH Hilo improved to 3-0-2.
Chaminade demonstrated a stout defense against a Vulcans offense that had posted six goals in their past two contests including four at then-No. 8 Seattle Pacific on Sept. 12.
UH Hilo's aggressiveness was evident by its 7-to-1 shot count in the first 45 minutes. But the 'Swords countered in the second half with three shots while still holding their opponent to five looks.
Delaney Buntin (Vail, Ariz./Pima CC/Cienega HS),
Kenna Kiefer (Vail, Ariz./Cienega),
Gracie Knowd (Ramona, Calif./New Mexico State/Ramona HS) and
Savannah Breeze Miranda (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea) all took shots at Vulcans keeper Phoebe Barnes, who made two saves.
Izabella Holly (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega) started in goal for the 'Swords, making two saves while
Jordhan Kieres (Lakewood, Ohio/Bellermine Univ./Lakewood HS) played the final 45 minutes with three saves.
The Silverswords will face in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University in another non-conference matchup on Wednesday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
