Women’s Soccer Draws at Menlo to Open Road Trip

ATHERTON, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's soccer team opened their final road trip of the season Thursday with a 1-1 draw at Menlo College at Atherton Field.

Mariana Carpenter (Castle Rock, Colo./University of North Dakota/Castle View HS) accounted for the Silverswords' lone goal with time winding down in the first half with the Oaks countering for the tying goal in the second.

Chaminade's school-record seventh tie of the season moved them to 1-4-7 on the season and 1-4-4 in the Pacific West Conference. The deadlock was the fourth straight for Menlo, which is 2-5-6 and 0-3-4 in the conference.

Carpenter broke a scoreless deadlock in the 43rd minute, heading in the ball from a throw in by Kaila Levoit (Cypress, Calif./Golden West College/Cypress HS), the first goal and assist for both Silverswords, respectively, this season.

Menlo got the equalizer from Kaylin Gonzalez just five minutes into the second half. Gonzalez nearly got her seventh goal of the year in the 84th minute but CUH goalkeeper Maddie Merrick (Parker, Colo./Creighton University/Legend HS) made a stop to keep the game squared.

Chaminade had four opportunities inside of 10 minutes remaining including one with just 30 seconds left on a through ball over the Oaks defense to Sofia Desirello (Menifee, Calif./University of North Dakota/Paloma HS). Desirello had a path towards Oaks keeper Giorgia Melcore but was taken down by two Menlo defenders just outside the penalty box area to thwart their chance at the game-winner.

Haley Mo'okini (San Gabriel, Calif./Gabrielino) attempted six of Chaminade's 19 shots, three on-goal, while Lela Gi (Las Vegas/Liberty) took four and three by Bryana Yoshida (Makakilo, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Fresno Pacific University/Kapolei HS), two on-goal. Madelynne Knowd (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) was the other 'Sword with multiple attempts at the net.

Menlo attempted 14 shots, eight alone by Gonzalez.

Merrick made three saves while Melcore made six.

The Silverswords play their final mainland game Saturday at Jessup University. Kickoff is set for 8 a.m. Hawai'i time.
