HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team on Saturday wrapped up the PacWest/GNAC Challenge Saturday with an 88-59 defeat to the University of Alaska Anchorage at McCabe Gymnasium.
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) had a career-high 18 points for the Silverswords, who fell to 0-2 in both overall record and in the Challenge. The junior guard was 7-of-14 from the floor and made 4-of-6 free throws. She also pulled in a team-best seven rebounds.
The 'Swords put together competitive first and fourth quarters with the second the only one which got away from them. Chaminade trailed 17-15 at the first 10 minutes and was outscored by a mere 22-20 count in the final period.
Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) and
Maddy Weaver (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) each had nine points while all six points and both Chaminade's triples in the same were by
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway).
Mylee Anderson had 21 points for the Seawolves, who improved to 4-0 and 2-0 in the Challenge.
The 'Swords held UAA to just 5-for-24 shooting in the first quarter, allowing them to trail but just two heading into the second stanza. However, Alaska Anchorage's 15-0 run midway through the quarter allowed them to pull away.
The 'Swords shot 36.4 percent from the floor while the Seawolves were at a 42.0 percent clip. UAA also out-rebounded the home team by a 51-to-39 count.
The Silverswords return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22, when they face the University of California at Merced at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m.
