Women’s Basketball Downed by UC Merced

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team led for the first 35 minutes Saturday before visiting UC Merced rallied for a 66-60 win Saturday at McCabe Gymnasium.
 
Holly Dolny (Melbourne, Australia/Loyola University Chicago/Heathdale Christian College) posted a career-high 17 points, knocking down three 3-pointers for the Silverswords (0-3), who had a seven-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. Dolny also dished out four assists.
 
Maddy Weaver (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds with Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) adding eight points and 11 boards. Ashley Holen (Watford City, N.D./Minot State University/Watford City HS) and Kylie Squier (Branchville, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) added seven points each.
 
Mariah Flores had eight of her 18 points during a 16-4 stretch in the fourth quarter to help the Bobcats improve to 3-1.
 
Chaminade led 17-15 after the first 10 minutes before outscoring UC Merced, 22-13, in the second quarter with Squier accounting for seven of them. Dolny had five to help the 'Swords take a 39-28 halftime lead.
 
After a defensive third period in which both teams combined for just 20 points, Schuetze hit a layup on the first possession of the fourth quarter, putting CUH up 49-40. The 'Swords would hold the lead until the Bobcats took a 57-55 lead with 2:56 left, their first since the start of the game. Dolny answered with a three-point play on the other end to put Chaminade ahead but Kylie Salzler's triple on the Bobcats' next possession put them up 60-58, giving them the lead for good.
 
The 'Swords shot 35.5 percent from the floor, made 8-of-18 from 3-point range and was 8-of-16 at the free throw line. They grabbed 40 rebounds, dished out 16 assists and forced 17 UC Merced turnovers.
 
The Bobcats shot 33.9 percent from the field with 8-of-17 shooting from the long distance and was 18-of-26 from the charity stripe. UCM hauled in 45 boards, dished out 13 assists and blocked five shots.
 
The Silverswords are next in action on Saturday, Nov. 29 when they host Cal State East Bay at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
