HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team on Saturday played both their final non-conference and McCabe Gymnasium home game of the calendar year with an 80-67 defeat to Cal State East Bay.
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) posted a career-high 21 points, hitting six field goals and making nine free throws while
Holly Dolny (Melbourne, Australia/Loyola University Chicago/Heathdale Christian College) added 15 points for the Silverswords (0-4).
Ashley Holen (Watford City, N.D./Minot State University/Watford City HS) chipped in with another eight points.
Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) and
Dezaray Carter (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts Academy), the latter seeing her first action of the season, combined for nine of the 'Swords' 12 assists with Parado dishing out a career-high five.
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) pulled down a season-best six rebounds.
Taylor Eldredge, a Lahainaluna graduate, had a team-high 17 points for the Pioneers (1-4).
Chaminade went toe-to-toe with East Bay but went the final six minutes of the first quarter without a field goal, resulting in a 15-point deficit after the first 10 minutes. Buttery ended the drought, burying a 3-pointer, her fifth of the season, on the first possession of the second quarter. The senior guard made three all of last season.
Despite their first half struggles, the 'Swords put together a more competitive second half, outscoring the Pioneers, 39-32, in the second 20 minutes.
The Silverswords managed to draw 30 East Bay fouls, resulting in 36 trips to the free throw line, making 29. Along with Schuetze's living at the charity stripe, Holen went to the line eight times with six makes. Chaminade shot 35.7 percent from the field with Dolney making half of their four made triples.
Cal State East Bay hit 36.6 percent from the floor with three 3-pointers and was 17-of-22 at the foul line. The Pioneers also out-rebounded the 'Swords, 50-to-32, and had 17 assists.
Although their home slate in 2025 is over, the Silverswords have one more game on the island when they face in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University on Tuesday at The Shark Tank to open Pacific West Conference action. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and will be on state-wide television on Spectrum Sports.
