HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team on Friday dropped both games of their doubleheader to Cal Poly Humboldt at Silversword Field.
The Silverswords were run-ruled in a 13-1, five-inning, decision in the opener then managed to take the nightcap to extra innings but fell in a 7-5 decision that took nine innings to settle.
Taryn Fujioka (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) collected three hits and scored twice for Chaminade which fell to 1-10 on the season.
Game 1: CPH 13, CUH 1 (5 inn.)
Vanessa Pena (Paramount, Calif./Paramount) accounted for the 'Swords' only run, a third-inning RBI single. Chaminade's bats were held in check to just four hits. Fujioka,
Isabel Rodriguez (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) and
Alena Frost (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) had the other three knocks, all singles.
Kamryn Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) was tagged with the loss while the Lumberjacks' Gaige Garcia picked up the win.
It was just the second run-rule loss by the 'Swords since the start of the 2024 season.
Game 2: CPH 7, CUH 5 (9 inn.)
A
SoSo Hayes (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) RBI single accounted for the first run of the nightcap. After Humboldt posted a three-run third, Tuifao's run-scoring hit brought the 'Swords to within 3-2. In the sixth, Fujioka hit a moon-shot to right where the right fielder kept drifting back but couldn't make the catch near the fence. That allowed
Bailey Jacobsen (Buena Park, Calif./Cypress) to score, tying the game at 3.
The 'Swords had the bases loaded in the seventh but couldn't push the winning run across. In the eighth and the tiebreaker rule in effect (runner placed at second), Rodriguez represented the winning run at third but
Desiree Bravo (Corona, Calif./Mt. San Antonio College/Centennial HS) was robbed of a walk-off when Lumberjacks first baseman Katlyn Gifford, who came in as a defensive replacement in the inning, made a diving stop of Bravo's line drive that seemed destined for the right field line.
The Lumberjacks used that momentum to plate four runs in the top of the ninth. Chaminade got two runs back in the bottom of the frame thanks to Hayes' second RBI and a
Malia Cordova (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore) run-plating single but that would be it.
Chaminade had 11 hits in the second game. Fujioka had two knocks, giving her hits in eight of her past nine games. Tuifao and Hayes also had multiple hits while Frost had gotten base knocks in three of her last four.
Peña took the loss while the win went to Riley Shopp.
The Silverswords return to action on Super Bowl Sunday with a twin bill against Southern Oregon University at Silversword Field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
