ATHERTON, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's tennis team on Thursday fell in a 7-0 decision to new Pacific West Conference member Jessup University at the Cartan Tennis Courts on the Menlo College campus.
The Silverswords had one of their most competitive matches of the season in just the second documented meeting between the two programs.
In doubles, the Warriors took Flights 1 and 3 to win the point, although the 'Swords' No. 2 duo of
Berylin Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) and
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) took three games in their match.
Carine Bleasdell (Kihei, Maui, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Technology Academy) and
Danica Palmer (Philadelphia/Upper Merion Area) won two games at No. 3 while
Kirra Carvalho (Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kaua'i) and
Kylie Ye (Laie, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Asia Pacific International School) took a game at No. 1 doubles.
In singles competition, Lau, at Flight 3, rallied from a set down before being outlasted in a third-set tiebreaker by Angel Cody, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. Carvalho, at the No. 2 spot, nearly had a comeback of her own before falling to Nia Macay, 6-0, 6-4.
Chaminade fell to 0-8 while Jessup is 2-9.
The Silverswords will remain in Atherton on Friday, wrapping up their northern California road trip at Menlo College. Doubles action is scheduled for 8 a.m. Hawai'i time.
