LINCOLN, Calif. – The Chaminade University baseball team came up on the short end in Tuesday's dual seven-inning doubleheader to Jessup University at McBean Park.
The Warriors slugged their way to a 21-6 win in the opener but the Silverswords dug deep in second, dropping the nightcap, 3-2.
The 'Swords fell to 13-19 overall and 11-16 in the Pacific West Conference. Jessup, one of three new members to the PacWest this year, is 20-8 and 17-6 in the conference.
Game 1: JSP 21, CUH 6
Almost nothing went the 'Swords way from the jump. The Warriors scored three times in the home half of the first on a bases-clearing double by Jack Grant. They added two more in the second then exploded for 16 over the next two innings.
Chaminade scored twice in the third on an RBI groundout by
Jake Harper (San Pedro, Calif./El Camino College/San Pedro HS) followed by a
Jaren Banis (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) run-producing single.
In the sixth,
Evon Williams (San Ramon, Calif./Dougherty Valley) drove in two runs and
Jackson Dorn (Happy Valley, Ore./Mt. Hood CC/Clackamas HS) got an RBI single for three runs in the frame. The 'Swords got their final run in the seventh when
Alex Greb (Seattle/Wenatchee Valley College/Ballard HS) walked with the bases loaded.
Dorn managed two of CUH's six hits in the game with
Max Patterson (Honolulu/Olympic College/Kalani HS) taking the loss.
Ryan Shimabukuro (El Cerrito, Calif./College of Marin/Saint Mary's College HS) had the most success of the 'Swords' hurlers, tossing two scoreless innings.
Jessup put out 18 hits with four players getting multi-hit performances. Hailama Swartman, a Honolulu native, earned the win.
Game 2: JSP 3, CUH 2
Like they did in the opener, Jessup pounced early, plating three runs in the first two innings with Chaminade getting a run on Harper's RBI infield single in the third.
Trysten Mooney (Helena, Mont./Wenatchee Valley College/Capital HS) got CUH to within 3-2 on a fifth inning sacrifice fly.
But unlike the first game, the Silverswords' pitching held up with starter
Mac Zawistoski (Coto de Caza, Calif./JSerra Catholic) retiring six straight Warriors after they scored their runs.
Jessup put two runners on in the fifth with
Brennen Panis (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea) being summoned from the bullpen. The freshman then got two outs on the same play on a batter's interference call while the runner at first was also called out. The unconventional double play got the 'Swords out of the inning.
Banis led off the sixth with a single, Chaminade's fifth and final base hit, but was ultimately stranded at second base. The 'Swords were then retired in order on three strikeouts by Jessup closer Nolan Thebiay.
Zawistoski scattered four hits in 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. Panis did not allow a hit in his 1 2/3 innings on the mound.
Diego Chavez got the win for Jessup with Thebiay earning the save.
The Silveswords will look to salvage a game on Wednesday, their final contest of their 12-game, 16-day road trip. First pitch of the series final is 2 p.m. Hawai'i time.
