HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University softball team opened their final series of the 2025 season Friday with a doubleheader at the University of Hawai'i Hilo.
Unfortunately, the Silverswords left their scoring ability in Honolulu, suffering two shutout losses, 3-0 and 4-0, at Vulcans Softball Field.
The 'Swords managed just nine total hits on the afternoon.
Chaminade fell to 9-41 overall and 8-27 in the Pacific West Conference while UH Hilo improved to 24-21 and 18-14. The Vulcans have taken all five meetings this season and earned four more points in the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge.
Game 1: UHH 3, CUH 0
The Vulcans got all they needed with a run in the bottom of the first inning then tacked on single runs in the third and sixth.
The 'Swords had just two opportunities with runners in scoring position, getting
Bailey Jacobsen (Buena Park, Calif./Cypress) to second in the opening frame.
They weren't able to get a runner past first base until the top of the seventh when
Mikala Jacobsen (Buena Park, Calif./Cypress College/Cypress HS) and
Summer Buck (Honolulu/Kaiser) led off the frame with consecutive singles which actually brought the tying run to the plate. However, the Vulcans got three straight outs to quell the threat and end the game.
Bailey Benson (Cheney, Wash./Gonzaga Preparatory) allowed three runs, two earned, while scattering six hits to absorb the loss. CUH was able to muster just four hits in the opener.
Madi Lee earned the complete game win for the home team.
Game 2: UHH 4, CUH 0
Kamryn Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) and UH Hilo's Madison Rabe, who tossed a no-hitter on April 11, were locked in a pitchers' duel for four innings before the Vulcans got a two-out run in the bottom of the fifth.
However, UH Hilo added insurance with a three-run sixth.
Chaminade managed to get the leadoff batter on in three of the first six innings but could not capitalize.
In the seventh,
Bailey Jacobsen and Buck led off with a single and walk, respectively, then Benson got a pinch hit single to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. However, all three were stranded.
Taryn Fujioka (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) had two of the 'Swords' five hits, increasing her school career record total to 193. Lopez went the distance – her first complete game of the season – scattering 11 hits. Chaminade also turned its 26th double play of the season, tying them for fifth nationally in Division II.
Rabe got the win for the Vulcans.
The Silverswords will wrap up the season on Saturday with the third and final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
