WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University baseball team on Friday dropped the second contest of their four-game series to Hawai'i Pacific University, 11-4, at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Baseball Complex.
Jake Harper (San Pedro, Calif./El Camino College/San Pedro HS) threw out a season-high four hits which also tied his career high while
Cade Fujii (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Porterville College/Kapolei HS) went 3-for-5.
Andrew Karns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene) drove in a pair for the Silverswords, who fell to 17-31 and 15-27 in the Pacific West Conference.
Bronson Rivera drove in six for the Sharks, who improved to 29-19 and 27-15 in the PacWest.
Like they did in Thursday's series opener, HPU posted a first-inning crooked number, scoring three times. However unlike the first meeting, the 'Swords had a response with an RBI groundout from
Safea Villaruz-Mauai (Hilo, Hawai'i/BYU/Waiakea HS) and a Karns infield single that brought in their second run.
The Sharks posted three more runs in the third then added single scores in the next two frames. Fujii's RBI single in the third would be Chaminade's lone run until the eighth on Karns' second RBI of the afternoon, bringing Fujii in on a ground out.
In what was likely his final appearance as a Silverswords, senior starter
Xavier Stoker (Cedar City, Utah/College of the Canyons//Canyon View HS) went five innings, throwing 101 pitches (not including one pitch clock violation), striking out three. Fellow senior
Mac Elske (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lower Columbia CC/Lakeridge HS) went the last four, allowing three hits and one run on 50 total pitches.
HPU's Vincente Molina tossed two innings out of the bullpen to earn the win.
The Silverswords and Sharks will end the season with a pair of seven-inning contests on Sunday at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu. Because of impending bad weather in the forecast for the evening, the doubleheader has been moved up to 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Nine 'Swords will be honored after the completion of the twin bill: Elske, Harper, Stoker, Villaruz-Mauai,
Sebastian Castro (San Diego/Palomar College/Great Oak),
Jackson Dorn (Happy Valley, Ore./Mt. Hood CC/Clackamas HS),
Casey Kudell (Irvine, Calif./Irvine Valley College/Irvine HS),
Max Patterson (Honolulu/Olympic College/Kalani HS) and
Brayden Wells (Pullman, Wash./Lower Columbia CC/Pullman HS).
