WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's soccer team opened their 2025 regular season Thursday with a 2-0 loss to Cal Poly Humboldt at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Auxiliary Fields.
Despite an 11-to-9 shot advantage, the Silverswords could not capitalize with an 11-to-10 man advantage in the final 71 minutes after a Lumberjacks' red card for denying a scoring opportunity in the 19th minute.
Instead, it was Humboldt which took advantage of being a man down when Robert Somerville scored just six minutes later.
The 'Jacks kept Chaminade out of the net then got a big insurance goal scoring off a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.
Owen Caba (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) and
Kala'i Duncan (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) each took two shots at the net for CUH which also had three shots on-goal.
Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) made three saves for the Silverswords (0-1-0) while his goalkeeper counterpart, Edwin Monterrosa, also had three stops for Humboldt (1-1-1).
The Silverswords return to Waipio Soccer Complex on Tuesday, this time at the main stadium, when they face in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University in a non-conference tilt. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
