HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's and women's cross country teams took to the race course for the second time this season, hosting their own Chaminade Invitational at Kapiolani Park.
Competing at the same venue they ran in the Big Wave Invitational on Sept. 5, the Silverswords women finished second in the 5-kilometer run behind the University of Hawai'i Hilo with 42 points with the Vulcans capturing team honors with 17.
Jocelyn Thomas (Tonganoxie, Kan./Kaiser, Honolulu) was Chaminade's top finisher with a four-place overall finish in 20 minutes, 11.8 seconds.
Cassie Chong (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) enjoyed a top-10 finish, coming in 10th in 23:12.6
Emily Cooper (Mount Desert Island, Maine/Mount Desert Island) was the 'Swords' No. 3 finisher at 23:57.9 followed by
Jordyn Koki (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) at 24:14.5.
Also crossing the finish line were
Maggie Turnbach (Brick, N.J./St. Rose) at 24:29.9,
Aleah Montgomery (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Leilehua) at 26:10.9 and
Ava Walker (Las Vegas/Faith Lutheran) in 29:23.6. Turnbach and Walker, a former and current softball Silverswords, were making the race debuts.
Kathleen Raab of UH Hilo was the individual champion at 19:21.3.
In the men's 5-k, Hawai'i Pacific University took the men's title with 18 points while Chaminade had 37.
For the second straight race,
Kalama Francisco (Pahoa, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Hawai'i) was the 'Swords top finisher, coming in third overall in 18:29.1.
The Silverswords' second finisher was
Anthony John Bergancia (Saipan, Northern Marianas Islands/Marianas) at 19:14.0, followed by
Anthony Fontanez (Belmar, N.J./St. Rose) in 20:30.1,
James Carter (Raleigh, Miss./Harrison Central) in 21:25.5 and
Nate Mendez (Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kailua) in 21:38.9.
Isaiah Taylor (Wall, N.J./St. Rose),
Dyson Murakami (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kalani) and
Nicholas Gebbia (San Antonio, Texas/Lee) rounded out Chaminade's finishing runners.
HPU's Drake Hanley was the individual champion at 17:53.9.
The Silverswords will next compete at the HPU Invitational at the Hawai'i Country Club on Saturday, Sept. 27, site of November's Pacific West Conference Championships.
