HONOLULU – Although the Chaminade University women's basketball team got off to a slow offensive start, they managed to hang around before ultimately succumbing to Biola University, 63-53, at McCabe Gymnasium.
The Silverswords trailed 14-5 after the game's opening 10 minutes but went shot-for-shot in the final 30.
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) continued to post outstanding numbers with 18 points, her third straight game as the Silverswords' top scorer. The junior wing also collected six rebounds.
Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists for the 'Swords, who fell to 0-13 and 0-9 in the Pacific West Conference.
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) chipped in with nine, knocking down three 3-pointers while
Ashley Holen (Watford City, N.D./Minot State University/Watford City HS) had six on the scoreboard.
Laney Grider had 17 points for the Eagles (7-8, 4-6 PacWest).
The 'Swords managed just one field goal in the first quarter, a Schuetze layup midway through. They seemed to have righted themselves, thanks to a 17-14 second quarter to trail 28-22 at halftime. CUH made 6-of-14 shots from the floor and held BU to 5-of-14 shooting.
However, they could not establish a significant run in the second half. Buttery's triple with 8:38 left chopped the deficit to 45-39, the closest Chaminade got before Biola pulled away down the stretch.
The 'Swords were held to 28.1 percent from the floor with seven made 3s and was 14-of-20 at the foul line. They grabbed 33 rebounds, dished out 13 assists and committed 13 turnovers, tied for the fewest of the season, and gave the rock away just three times in the final 20 minutes.
Biola shot at a 41.8 percent clip, making just 4-of-25 from 3-point distance and was 13-of-21 at the charity stripe. The Eagles pulled down 46 boards with 11 assists while giving it over 20 times, marking the first time this season that Chaminade forced more turnovers than the opposition.
The Silverswords will wrap up their five-game homestand Saturday against Westmont College. Tipoff at McCabe Gym is 2 p.m.
