SAN DIEGO – The Chaminade University women's basketball team opened their three-game Southern California road trip on Thursday, falling to Point Loma, 79-50, at Golden Gymnasium.
The Silverswords (0-15, 0-11 Pacific West Conference) were within a deuce late in the second quarter before a decisive third period gave the Sea Lions the win.
For the fifth straight game,
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) led the 'Swords in the scoring ledger with 13 points while adding six rebounds and three steals while
Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) had 12 points, three boards and a pair of assists.
Kylie Squier (Branchville, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) chipped in with 11 points while
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) was the team's rebounding leader with eight.
Holly Dolny (Melbourne, Australia/Loyola University Chicago/Heathdale Christian College) dished out a career-high five assists.
Eiley Tippins had 20 points for Point Loma (14-4, 11-2 PacWest).
Trailing by 10 early in the second quarter, Squier knocked down a 3-pointer that began an 10-2 run. Schuetze's layup got Chaminade to within 32-30 with 3:41 left in the half before Point Loma managed to extend to a seven-point halftime edge.
The Sea Lions scored the first 11 points of the second half to help them pull away.
Chaminade shot 28.6 percent from the floor with seven 3s – Parado and Squier hit two each – and were an excellent 17-of-20 at the free throw line. The 'Swords had 33 rebounds, 11 on the offensive end, dished out 11 assists, getting seven steals with four blocks, tied for the second highest of the season.
Point Loma shot at a 48.4 percent clip with 8 triples and was 11-of-20 at the foul line with 36 rebounds, 22 assists and 17 steals.
The Silverswords will be at Concordia University Irvine on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Hawai'i time.
