WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – Year 3 of the Chaminade University baseball team began Friday with the Silverswords falling in a 6-3 decision to Cal State Los Angeles at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Silverswords spotted the Golden Eagles the first six runs of the game before showing some fight in the final frame.
Cal State LA, who defeated Hawai'i Pacific University earlier in the afternoon, held the 'Swords hitless through 7 2/3 innings before
Trysten Mooney (Helena, Mont./Wenatchee Valley College/Capital HS) ended the no-no with a solid single to center with two outs in the eighth. One batter earlier,
Aydan Lobetos (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) ended the shutout with a sacrifice fly.
Facing a five-run deficit in the ninth,
Cade Fujii (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Porterville College/Kapolei HS) got a one-out walk then
Bode Poler's (Montesano, Wash./Gonzaga University/Montesano HS) hustle down the first base line forced a throwing error.
Taylor Ayala (Bountiful, Utah/Salt Lake CC/Woods Cross HS) got Chaminade's second hit with a double into the left-center gap to drive Fujii in followed by an RBI groundout from
Alex Hamada (Aliso Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel).
The Silverswords actually had the tying run in the hole when the Golden Eagles finally got the final out.
Anthony O'Canas (Woodland, Calif./American River College/Woodland HS) took the loss for the 'Swords.
Jacob Petersen (Sammamish, Wash./Everett CC/Skyline HS) tossed three innings, allowing just three hits and
Kyle Seo (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento City College/Inderkum HS), Chaminade's third pitcher, allowed just one hit in the final 3 2/3 frames.
Alejandro Hueza threw five hitless innings to pick up the win.
The Silverswords and Golden Eagles close out the series with a nine- and seven-inning doubleheader on Sunday at Hans L'Orange Field. First pitch of the matinee is at 2 p.m.
