IRVINE, Calif. – The Chaminade University softball team dropped both games in the second day of the Concordia Kickoff Classic at Great Park on Saturday.
The Silverswords were on the short end of a 1-0 pitchers' duel to Chico State in the morning game then fell to Colorado Christian University, 11-1 in five innings, in the evening session.
Mikala Jacobsen (Buena Park, Calif./Cypress College/Cypress HS) collected three more hits on the day while
Summer Buck (Honolulu/Kaiser) also had knocks in each game for the Silverswords (0-4).
Game 1: Chico 1, CUH 0
Chaminade's
Vanessa Pena (Paramount, Calif./Paramount) and Chico State's Amelie Valdez went pitch-for-pitch in the circle, holding opposing batters to bagels on the scoreboard.
Peña made just one mistake, a pitch that was taken out of the park in the fourth by Tiana Johnson.
The 'Swords had chances to tie the game by getting base runners on the latter innings but could not capitalize with the bases loaded in the sixth and with two on the seventh.
Peña scattered six hits and did not issue a walk with a pair of strikeouts in going the distance for Chaminade. The 'Swords had six hits including a Buck two-out triple in the top of the first.
Valdez struck out nine 'Swords to earn the win.
Game 2: CCU 11, CUH 1 (5 inn.)
Very little went right for Chaminade from the start against Colorado Christian. The Cougars put the first five batters on base, 14 batters in all in plating nine runs in the top of the first.
Jacobsen tripled to lead off the 'Swords' half of the first then came home on Peña's groundout. However, that would be the only run for Chaminade in the nightcap.
Jacobsen collected two hits while the Silverswords' first five batters in the lineup card got five of their six hits.
Ava Walker (Las Vegas/Faith Lutheran) took the loss.
Hanna Espinoza earned the win for CCU (3-1).
The Silverswords wrap up the CUI Kickoff Classic on Sunday with a single game against 17th-ranked Cal State East Bay. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Hawai'i time.
